Tony Award Winner Gary “Keep It Gay” Beach died aged 70

The Tony Award-winning star of The Producers Gary Beach has died aged 70.  He originated the role of the cross-dressing director Roger De Bris. in Mel Brook’s mega Broadway hit, and went on to don his lavish frocks to reprise the role in the movie adaptation. The out-gay actor’s outrageous performance won him legions of fans and will go down in the annals of Broadway history as one of the most wonderful campiest performances of all-time.

Mr. Beach was also Lumière, the genial candelabra featured in the song “Be Our Guest,” in the original Broadway cast of “Beauty and the Beast” in 1994, earning a Tony nomination for the performance. He was nominated for another Tony for his turn as Albin in the 2004 revival of “La Cage aux Folles.”

He also appeared on Will & Grace, Queer as Folk, and The John Larroquette Show as well as several other TV shows.

Gary Beach is survived by his husband Jeffrey Barnett
