This is Andrew Garfield’s Year : first “tick, tick….Boom!” then “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”

2021 is shaping up to be a really good year for the handsome American/British Tony Award Winning actor Andrew Garfield.  The ex-star of both The Amazing Spiderman and also Angels in America is the star of tick, tick…..Boom! the directing debut of Lin-Manuel Miranda.  It’s adapted from “Rent” creator Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical of the same name.

The official synopsis from Netflix reads: Andrew Garfield plays Jon, a young theater composer who’s waiting tables at a New York City diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical. Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere: from his girlfriend Susan (Alexandra Shipp), who dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City; from his friend Michael (Robin de Jesús), who has moved on from his dream to a life of financial security; amidst an artistic community being ravaged by the AIDS epidemic. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and faces the question everyone must reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have?”

“tick, tick…Boom” will open in select theaters and stream on Netflix this fall, which happens to be the 25th anniversary of Larson’s tragic passing and the Broadway debut of “Rent.” Watch the first trailer for the musical adaptation in the video below.

Then on September 17th Searchlight Pictures will release  “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” starring Andrew Garfield and Jessica Chastain as infamous televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker.  It’s based on one of Queerguru’s favorite documentaries of all time (of the same name) that was directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato and released in 2000.

Directed by Michael Showalter and based on a true story, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” details the rise, fall and redemption of Jim and Tammy Faye during the 1970s and ’80s. The Bakkers went from humble beginnings to creating the world’s largest religious broadcasting network, as well as a Christian theme park. The couple soon soared to fame for their teachings about love and acceptance, but it all came tumbling down when their many secrets were exposed.

The trailer gives a sneak peek into the brightly-colored world of Jim and Tammy, but things begin to go south when financial improprieties, a sex scandal, and rivals break up their marriage — and their empire. As the trailer progresses and the Bakkers grow older, Chastain and Garfield become nearly unrecognizable, showing off the hair and makeup department’s skills.

Garfield is also currently starring in a remake of Evelyn Waugh’s classic “Brideshead Revisited’ playing the part of Charles Ryder that originally made Jeremy Irons a star.  Luca Guadagnino, best known for the  Call Me By Your Name, is both writer and director, and the film is due to be released in 2022.

AND for those of you who are curious (!) Garfield who once dated Emma Stone identifies himself as heterosexual but has said that he has “an openness to any impulses that may arise within me at any time”
