Kudos to director/writer/actor Gretchen Wylder for making us laugh really loud at things we never thought we would find the least bit funny. ‘These Thems’ her brilliant ground-breaking new web-series that launched last night on You Tube had us focus on a story with non binary and trans identities.
Wylder (who identifies as a queer femme) plays Gretchen who during a routine visit to the gynecologist realizes that she is queer. Meanwhile in the next examination room Vero (Victoria ‘Vico’ Ortiz) spends the whole appointment explaining gender identifies to the Doctor only to realize that they should dump their dog-walking job to become a queer educator.
This is the first episode of 7, and now we have seen the first one it seems so very odd that it took so long for non binary, genderqueer, and trans-masculine identities to be the centerpiece of such a well-made series like this .
In a statement Wylie said “It was important to me to create These Thems because I wanted to bring awareness of our community through the element of comedy. Laughter is universal and it is the best tool we have to educate. By highlighting identities that haven’t been given much attention in the media, specifically about nonbinary, trans-masculine, and queer femme experiences, we are able to showcase relatable characters that truly anyone can learn from and empathize with. Representation is so important and the goal of These Thems is to give queer audiences a show made for and by our community while simultaneously offering a loving lens into the LGBTQIA+ world for cis/het audiences who want to become better allies. We provide accurate representation, dynamic storylines, and a whole lot of laughter and heart.”
