The Sound of Identity : when Lucia Lucas made Don Giovanni soar

To mark the start of PRIDE MONTH on June 1st Shout Studios will be releasing one of the most uplifting  LGBTQ documentaries we have seen for a very time.  THE SOUND OF IDENTITY is the story of how Tobias Picker a remarkable queer composer who was the forward-thinking Artistic Director of Tulsa Opera House,  decided to mount a production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. It was he who decided to cast Lucia Lucas for the lead role purely on her talent but he is more than aware of the risks of his controversial choice.

Lucas is an extremely talented American opera singer, who lives in Germany with her opera singer wife and enjoys a very successful career in Europe.  Don Giovanni was to be her American debut.

From the very first scene of James Kicklighter’s film is impossible not to warm to the disarmingly charming Lucas.  Besides her powerful voice that literally sends shivers down your back, both her quiet confidence and her sheer natural generosity of spirit, leave you slightly in awe.  Lucas insists that there is more to her than being trans, and that is so reflected in how Kicklighter filmed her story.

Below is a trailer of the documentary to whet your appetite, but coming soon for Pride Month will be Queerguru’s full review and exclusive interviews with both Lucia Lucas and also James Kicklighter.  So worth waiting for.
