When ELSKA’s editor/photographer Liam Campbell told us he was flying back to Taiwan to shoot a new edition of his fab queer photozine in Taipai we were very curious to discover why this globe-trotting journalist wanted to take another look. After all is a very long way from the tiny market Town in Wales that Campbell still calls home.

In the past Taipei has been described as the ‘gay capital of Asia’ and it was the first country in Asia to adopt same-sex marriage. It’s all a long way from its very trouble past when it was governed by Japan, and then being reclaimed back by China after WW2, which they finally broke away from. It’s a very complicated history BUT the long and short of it is that these days queer Tawianese have more rights than they in the mainlaind
The narrative in Elska Taipei is a combination of diaries and recollections by Campbell, the book’s creator along with stories contributed by some of the men we met in Taipei, presented in their original languages. Each of these men was also photographed by Campbell, in their city’s streets and at home, dressed in their own style or sometimes not dressed at all. The result is diverse, transportative, and totally honest.
