Since SIR ELTON JOHN created the Elton John Aids Foundation 25 years ago they have raised more than $400 million to challenge discrimination against people affected by the epidemic, prevent infections, provide treatment and services, and motivate governments to end AIDS. It’s a remarkable achievement and we think the Sir Elton does not always gets the full credit for what he gave birth too.
The latest project EJAF are funding is in South Africa. The Anova Health Institute is spearheading WE THE BRAVE which is a sexual health campaign for men who have sex with men (MSM). It is the first large-scale campaign ever in the country to specifically address gay men and other men who have sex with men. Their campaign addresses both prevention and treatment issues in an affirming, non-judgemental and sex positive way, which is entertaining and engaging.
In South Africa men who have sex with men are highly stigmatized and it’s tough to seek the care you need when you have to tackle discrimination and fear at the same time. One of the aims of EJAF is helping to break down these barriers that marginalized groups face so that no matter who you are, and where you are, you can have the care you need.
Although major countries such as the US and the UK have seen remarkable levels of decline, the South Africa has the biggest HIV epidemic in the world with 7.7 million people living with HIV.
So We The Brave runs across South Africa linking men at risk or living with HIV to the care and psychological support they may need to live a healthy life, including Call 4 Care helplines that are available via WhatsApp or online 24 hours a day for those who want to receive support in a private and anonymous way. It is the country’s most compelling campaign supporting vulnerable young gay men to break down the judgement around HIV.
They also operate one of most impressive and consumer friendly websites which even offers basic advice that we may take for granted, but others don’t. Hence the video on how to use a condom.
