Hot on the heels of the trainwreck of the movie The House of Gucci, Apple TV is setting its sights on now one, but two of the grandest old Fashion Houses for its new film. The New Look will star Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) and Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche) focusing on the designers changing relationships and the genesis of Dior’s New Look tailoring in the Post-War period in Paris.
In the post World War 2 days Dior was catapulted to the peak of Paris Couture with his wasp-waisted jackets and full skirts with were such a breakaway from Chanel’s very unstructured look. The two designers were also totally different: Dior, a discreetly closeted man who kept himself to himself and his garden. Whilst Madame Chanel hung around very publicly in high society, including at one time, several high-up Nazis.
]The series promises to cover all the peripheral figures in Dior’s and Chanel’s lives, including Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Balmain, Cristobal Balenciaga, and Hubert de Givenchy ……. all of them gay …… at least in private. Unlike the bisexual Madame Chanel who liked to be with both men and women, It will be very interesting to see if this is covered in the film series
