The multi-award-winning play that The Telegraph called “perhaps the most American play of this century so far“ is coming to Boston’s South End. Matthew Lopez‘s “The Inheritance” brilliantly transposes E.M. Forster’s great classic novel Howards End to 21st century New York. It examines love between gay men in contemporary New York a generation after the AIDS epidemic and asks what the current generation owes to its forebears
The Guardian reviewer wrote: “one of the most intense debates is about the status of gay culture which, having fought so long against oppression, now finds itself in danger of being co-opted.“
Originally the play was commissioned by Hartford Stage in Hartford, Connecticut but it premiered in London at the Young Vic Theatre. Even though the play was staged in two parts of over three hours each it still received a tidal wave of critical acclaim that propelled it into winning 4 Oliver Awards inc Best New Play.
When the play opened on Broadway in 2019 and was once again directed by Stephen Daldry, it was surprisingly met with mixed reviews although it didn’t stop it from winning 4 Tony Awards including Best Play and 5 Drama Desk Awards
This new production of this extraordinary play in Boston is a must-see for any gay man of any age
