Just recently GLAAD reported concern about a decline in LGBGTQ representation on the large and small screen. We are sure they are correct about that, but after seeing the list of Golden Globe Nominations announced today it seems that queer is still very much here .
We have been through the list with a fine tooth comb and here is Queerguru’s list of who to root for, and who we’d rather ignore.
There would have been such outage if queer favorite Schitt’s Creek hadn’t been acknowledged in their final season. It was nominated for Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy ; Dan Levy was nominated Best Supporting Actor – Television and all his Emmy winning co-stars, his dad Eugene, Catherine O’Hara, and Annie Murphy, were also nominated for Globes this year.
Queer uber producer Ryan Murphy with his midas touch was the force behind several nominations . Ratched was nominated for Best TV Series and its queer stars Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon, for respectively Best Performance by an Actress and Supporting Actress in a Television Series.
Murphy’s The Prom was nominated for Best Picture – Musical/Comedy but the only acting award for the film was for James Cordon for his dreadful stereotype cliched performance. Even the Globes can get it wrong.
Murphy’s Hollywood picked up just one nomination for queer actor Jim Parsons as Supporting actor.
Viola Davis was nominated for playing queer singer Ma Rainey (in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) and she is up against Andra Day playing another queer black singer as the star of The United States vs Billie Holliday. Bisexual singer Sia’s movie Music was also Best Picture – Musical/Comedy.
There are nominations also for Rosamund Pike who plays a queer character in I Care a Lot (due on Netflix on Feb 12th), plus for out gay Jodie Foster who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture, for The Mauritanian.
Jodie Comer was nominated again for her role as a queer assassin as Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama for Killing Eve.
Poor HBO that has been replaced by Netflix as the most prolific queer channel these days still picked up a nod for The Flight Attendant, which has two major gay characters (one played by out actor T.R. Knight), and was nominated for Best Musical/Comedy series.
Two brilliant LGBTQ films, Two Of Us and The Life Ahead were nominated for Best Picture – Foreign Language. The former France, features a heartbreaking love story between two older women, whilst the later from Italy features a transgender actress, Abril Zamora, playing a trans character in a leading role
We hope HM The Queen is as excited as we are that The Crown scooped up a record number of nominations. It is up for best television series, while it also picked up five nominations in the acting categories. Olivia Colman (who plays Queen Elizabeth II) and newcomer Emma Corrin (Princess Diana) are up against each other for best actress, while hunky Josh O’Connor (Prince Charles) is up for best actor.
Gillian Anderson (Margaret Thatcher) and Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret) are both in the running for best supporting actress. Poor Prince Philip though, just like in real life he got overlooked again.
The Winners will be announced on February 28, 2021, and the ceremony will air live coast to coast 5-8 p.m. PT/8-11 p.m. ET on NBC from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.
