In early 2021, choreographer Doug Varone created 10 short films exploring aspects of the early months of the COVID pandemic. Having been a cinephile all his life he channeled his love of MGM musicals and built intimate filmed reflections of the isolation and frustration we all experienced. These are not dance films in the traditional sense, but personal stories unfolding like small scenes and set to some of the most iconic songs of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. The results are both humorous and heartbreaking. Building one story at a time, the films ultimately ask deeper questions of personal liberty and responsibility – life and death – that all of us faced.
They are screening this weekend in Miami Dade. The running time of all 10 films is 37 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A with the choreographer and moderated by Pioneer Winter.
