Taking ‘Growing Up Coy’ on the Road

Some 16 months ago we had the pleasure of interviewing filmmaker Eric Juhola about his rather stunning documentary “Growing Up Coy”  It is the tale of an extraordinary family and their very brave 6-year-old transgender girl, Coy Mathis, who is banned from using the girl’s bathroom at her elementary school in her small Colorado town. Juhola had spent almost 3 years of following Coy and her family,  and the finished film played at film festivals around the world winning 2 best documentary awards and also was named one of 2017’s best documentaries.

Now in this present turbulent political climate where the Far Right are determined to roll back the rights of minorities in general and the transgender community in particular with a plethora of ‘bathroom bills’ often being the first step, Juhola and his team want to be part of the ‘fight back’.

To this end, they are running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to take the film through bathroom bill states for FREE engaging screenings with talkbacks, in underserved communities with little or no resources for gender non-conforming kids, their families, and school communities.   They have already kicked off with events in Texas (see the video below) but need funds to enable the Tour to both continue and expand.

.
