Sordid Lives Team for Desert AIDS Walk 2021
WHY I WALK by Del Shores
Every year when The Sordid Lives Team comes back together to walk for Desert AIDS, I remember my friend Jim Eckerd. We lost Jim from AIDS complications right after we shot the film Sordid Lives. Jim was a Southern boy who loved my work. When I wrote Sordid Lives (the play), Jim asked if he could costume the play. Please keep in mind that Jim was already highly successful with major credits in film and TV. He costumed my play and film on a tiny budget! His costumes live on to this day. Brother Boy’s robe, pajamas and wig cap, his funeral dress, Latrelle’s conservative suits, Juanita’s only costume she ever wore, LaVonda’s outrageous get-ups, Noleta’s transformation from shorts and sleeveless blouse to her glam bar scene inspired by Thelma and Louise –and all the Sordid costumes that live on in other productions and Halloween costumes.
Thank you, Jim.
You and your work will never be forgotten!
If you can, donate today my walk today to celebrate the life and work of Jim
