Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story : a real lesson in fortitude and compassion

The story of Christopher Reeve is an astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star, and his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the benchmark for all the superheroes that followed.  Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in four memorable ‘Superman’ films and played dozens of other roles  before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

After becoming a quadriplegic, he became a real-life superhero and the unofficial leader in the quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries. Reeves stepped up to the plate to become such a passionate advocate for disability rights and care, all while continuing his career in cinema in front of and behind the camera.

Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui‘s compelling and affectionate new award-winning documentary plays tribute to Reeve’s sheer courage in undertaking his extraordinary selfless journey.  Many may claim to be doing good for the sake of mankind, wheras Reeves just got on and did it.

This film includes never-before-seen intimate home movies and an extraordinary trove of personal archive material, as well as the first extended interviews ever filmed with Reeve’s three children about their father, and interviews with the A-list Hollywood actors who were Reeve’s colleagues and friends.

Ultimately, Super/Man is not about looking back so much as it is about continuing forward with the drive and spirit that Christopher modeled and instilled in us all.   His family, and the Christopher Reeve Foundation wants the documentary lead to important discussions about disability.

So  don’t miss either the film or the opportunity to get involved in the crucial support work that he started.
