Steve Bronski who formed the British synthpop trio Bronski Beat with singer Jimmy Sommerville in the 1980s has died aged 61. All members of the group were openly gay which was extremely rare back then.
They achieved success with their 1984 chart hit “Smalltown Boy“, from their debut album The Age of Consent. ” It is still one of the LGBTQ+ community’s most beloved songs. Bronski Beat songs contained political commentary on gay-related issues, something that Sommerville continued with when he left the band in 1985.
He was replaced by vocalist John Foster, with whom the band continued to have hits in the UK and Europe through 1986. Foster left Bronski Beat after their second album, and the band used a series of vocalists before dissolving in 1995.
