Confession time. At the risk of being forced to hand back our ‘gay card’, we have to say that we never watch Ru Paul’s Drag Race. Never ever. Maybe if we had known that Sasha Velour had been in power as the reigning queen of the show, we would have relented.
We have just come across the newest project from House of Velour and it seems like Sasha is set on redefining the role of America’s Next Drag Superstar. Her One Dollar Drags has just released its first installment of a short film anthology to be released over the course of this year, with each film celebrating drag in different forms and genres.
Community always comes first for Sasha, which is why this first short film, a reinterpretation of the 18th-century lore of Kurt Weill’s Pirate Jenny from The Threepenny Opera is so fitting — it features a full cast of her Brooklyn drag sisters. It also shows everybody that this queen of lip-synching actually has been hiding a rather stunning voice. Take a look at this wonderful video. It’s made us devoted fans. Of Sasha Velour at least.
