Our favorite queer Canadian/American singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright’s about to do the final installment of his virtual tour with Rufus Does Judy at Capitol Studios! He’ll actually be performing the classic 1961 Judy Garland concert in the same Hollywood studio Judy herself recorded in. On the same microphone too. You simply cannot possibly get more gayer than that.
The show will air on Judy Garland’s 99th birthday, Thursday, June 10th, with separate showtimes at 8PM for North America, Europe, and Australia, and you can rewatch it until June 13th. I will also be doing live fireside chats for all three territories.
Lastly, Rufus Does Judy at Capitol Studios will be commemorated with a limited edition t-shirt created for the occasion in partnership with designer Michael Kors. If you want ‘more’ Rufus …… and who wouldn’t? …. then you could always buy his NY Apartment that has just gone on sale. His longtime first-floor studio apartment in Gramercy Park is on the market for $450K, which is about $1000 for every square foot it’s got. Indeed, the apartment is a classic tiny studio with a tiny sink in a tiny kitchen and two windows that unfortunately both face brick walls. Wainwright bought the place in 2002 and, per the listing, worked on several albums and the opera Prima Donna there. In those early years, a NY Times piece says, the studio was “totally cluttered, with cigarette butts everywhere.”
Then Wainwright’s artistic-director husband, Jörn Weisbrodt, moved in, and the apartment became their landing spot in the city while the couple spent more time at their Montauk home and on the road touring. Panels of pink floral wallpaper are neatly framed by wall moldings, and fancy scenic wallpaper from Zuber (which can cost well over $10,000 for a full scene) gives the sleeping alcove (itself cordoned off by velvet curtains) a moody Tuscan-villa feel. Wainwright described the place to the New York Times back in 2012 thusly: “It’s a total dump, but in a weird way that’s very New York to me. Or what it used to be.” But marriage changed all that.
