As Miami Beach is the winter base of QUEERGURU we kind of feel obliged to watch Bravo’s Real Housewives of Miami TV series. It’s no hardship as we have warmed to (most) of the outrageous ladies who live their larger-than-life Miami lifestyles (You go Marysol ….)
It is the only Real Housewives series that has an openly gay cast member Julia Lemigova the former Russian beauty queen crowned Miss USSR in 1990 and wife of tennis champ Martina Navratilova. The number 9 features in their relationship: Martina had won 9 Wimbledon Championships and Julia had been engaged to married 9 times in the past This Holiday Season Julia has got together with the singer (and PTown Promotor) Jonathan Hawkins to record their very sweet take on “Santa Baby”. It is available to stream on iTunes, and all proceeds from the single will go to GLAAD, a non-profit organization focused on LGBTQ advocacy and cultural change.
At the beginning of the latest TV season, it was announced Martina was diagnosed with throat and breast cancers, but the very good news is that three months later, Martina announced that she was “cancer-free.” To celebrate the occasion Julia took it upon herself to secretly learn to sing an opera aria for her wife. It was such a wonderful sweet gesture, and Martina’s face didn’t register how painful this well-intended act of kindness was in reality.
Check out Julia rehearsing.
