Queerguru’s Peter Minkoff is full of ideas for Fabulous Queer Honeymoon Destinations

The season of wedding is almost upon us, so if you and your partner are planning a wedding, it’s time to book your honeymoon destination. Planning your honeymoon is a great little break from other wedding obligations and maybe the most satisfying task you have to consider. If you want to have a fun and relaxing trip that’s also safe for LGBTQ+ folks, here are the top destinations to consider:

French Polynesia

The Maldives is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations, but it doesn’t have the friendliest LGBTQ+ laws. If you want to feel completely safe and open with your partner, French Polynesia might be a better choice for a tropical honeymoon. Moorea in the summer is absolutely magical with perfect weather, glimmering water and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy (including swimming with humpback whales!) Pay for an overwater bungalow room that’s definitely worth the price and wake up with the sound of the ocean or enjoy a quick dip whenever you want. The excursions and activities in French Polynesia include snorkeling, diving, 4WD adventures, sailing and hiking, but the best thing they offer is definitely relaxation, peace and romance.

Merida, Mexico

If you’re delighted by the idea of Mexico as your honeymoon destination but not so much about all the crowds in popular spots like Tulum, you can opt for Merida. This Yucatan city is one of the top LGBTQ+ travel destinations today because it’s full of life, excitement and friendly and accepting people. If you’re a couple that doesn’t want to spend all their time at the beach or in the room, you’ll have plenty of things to do in Merida from Mayan heritage education to fun city exploration.

The best place to start your honeymoon activities is Plaza Grande—an alluring center of happenings surrounded by breathtaking architecture. The city is also speckled with museums, galleries and other art attractions dedicated to Mayan culture, modern art, Mexican history, etc. But you can always just enjoy the perfect weather by the pool, soak up the sun and sip on some delish cocktails.

Australia

The entire country of Australia is wonderful and full of exciting things to do for LGBTQ couples. The country is safe and friendly towards all people and locals are more than happy to welcome you to their wonderful Land Down Under. If you’re a fan of big cities and urban activities, then places like Sydney, Melbourne or even smaller Cairns will fit your requirements. And if you want to mix in some of the famous Oz island vibes into your honeymoon, you can visit Magnetic Island for a one or two-day excursion. Book a villa stay for a top-tier romantic experience and enjoy the beach, the ocean and relaxing sailing excursions. This island will also bring you close to Australian cute animals and all the underwater riches and blessings.

Phuket, Thailand

This destination might be famous for nightlife and adrenaline-boosting water sports, but Phuket can also be a perfect place if you’re planning a chill LGBTQ+ honeymoon. This Thai paradise has one of the liveliest LGBTQ+ scenes and is friendly toward all people. If you want to relax after your wedding, you can enjoy the best offer of spa treatments in the world. From relaxing massages to mud baths and yoga sessions, you can get them all for a fraction of the price of European, USA or other western spa and wellness treatments.

Puerto Rico

If you’re from the States, you can hit Puerto Rico without even looking for your passport. Other LGBTQ couples will also find it easy to arrive at this honeymoon destination and enjoy the island life. Puerto Rico might be known for its fabulous beaches, but it has other suitable relaxing activities for couples. Between sunset dinners, rainforest tours, spa treatments, scenic drives and many outdoor adventures, you’ll get to enjoy adrenaline, romance and everything in between. One of the most magical things you can do in Puerto Rico is visit the bioluminescent bay of Laguna Grande or go horseback riding in the countryside—both adventures will result in plenty of romance and Insta-perfect photos.

End your wedding on the right note and plan a perfect getaway for you and your new spouse. These destinations above will offer everything an LGBTQ+ couple might need from a honeymoon and more.
