Queerguru’s Jose Mayorga reviews ‘We All Lie My Darling’. facing discrimination, HIV, and love.

A based on true events story is set in Sydney. We follow Nick  (Callum Needham) into the Stonewall Club after he has been expelled from his mother’s home because she learns he is gay and she doesn’t want to have him close to her.  At the club, he finds his cousin and friends. He moves to live in their apartment and revelations about each member of the group come to the surface.

The film highlights issues (drugs, living with HIV, social media, discrimination) that LGBTQ youth face in Australia today, and in many other countries where sexual diversity is accepted and respected.   While the protagonists interact, they show how to deal with their identities, feelings, and relationships.  Love is also in the air, particularly related to the involvement of the female protagonists.  We come to know little about the male characters.

Australian movies have a freshness that is always nice to watch, this film fits in but may be a forgettable one. Seems to me the drag representations in the film pay tribute to the instant queer classic The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Informative texts at the end remark the difficulties for the LGTB+ community in that continent.  Directed by Pierre-NIcolas Panasci
