Deathdrop – A Dragatha Christie Murder Mystery
The Garrick Theatre ☆☆☆☆☆
If you are looking for some seasonal fun and frolics but don’t fancy a traditional Panto then Deathdrop has all the ingredients of an hilarious night out.
It features RuPaul’s Drag Race superstars Courtney Act and Monét X Change, and is written by Holly Stars (who also performs).
Set in 1991 a gaggle of guests gather on Tuck Island for a soirée like no other. The tension rises as the outrageous guests reveal their suspicious and sordid pasts. One by one, each succumbs to a terrible murder until the final nerve shredding denouement and the murderer is revealed.
Monet X Change brings an astounding stage presence and enough charisma to fill the enormous Garrick Theatre; Courtney Act delivers a fizzing energy that keeps the whole show on the road and Holly Stars brings an incongruous northern English comic sensibility to both the script and her performance which bizarrely works hysterically well in contrast with the more glamorous international flavour of the cast.
This rampant, raucous, ridiculous romp of a murder mystery has gallons of gags, and more twists and turns than a drag queens wig. Monét performs the titular Deathdrop (the dramatic throwing oneself to the ground, one leg extended, made famous on RuPaul’s Drag Race) with such perfection that one can safely say there has never been a death like it on the London stage since Sybil Thorndike in St Joan (apologies to Quentin Crisp).
This show is an absolute delight and cast, creatives, crew, venue and producers all deserve the mightiest round of applause for being so bold and getting such a fun show on during this pandemic.
