Queerguru’s Allison Ananis makes her APRIL FLOWERS MUSIC PICKS

Aiyana-Lee Recently signed by legendary music producer LA Reid, 21-year-old British pop singer Aiyana-Lee is one to watch. The sexy songbird has released the music video for her single, “Table For Three” from her debut layered EP, Wednesday’s Child (Side A).

Aiyana Lee grew up surrounded by music. Her mother, manager, and creative partner, Nicole Daciana Anderson, is a multiplatinum singer-songwriter, her uncle was David Ruffin of The Temptations, and her grandfather was famed American soul singer, Jimmy Ruffin.

“Table For Three” proves that you don’t need anyone else’s love so long as it exists within. The music video showcases the varying sides of Aiyana—a literal depiction of me, myself, and I—cementing the narrative of self-love. Her music beautifully fuses contemporary pop elements with classic R&B and soul vibes.

LGBTQ advocate and activist Todrick Hall is a multi-talented singer, rapper, actor, director, choreographer, and social media personality who rose to prominence on and after his appearance on American Idol. His popular YouTube channel has over 3.5 million subscribers and 740 million channel views, consisting notably of original songs, musical collaborations, and choreographed flash mobs for Beyoncé. He also appears regularly on RuPaul’s Drag Race and season two of The Greatest Dancer on BBC.

Known for his eclectic and flamboyant performances, “Queen” is yet another example of Hall’s masterful, fun, and colorful works of art. Be on the lookout for his fifth studio 80’s inspired album “Algorhythm,” which will be released on June 1st.

Gay or not to be gay?  That is the (million) dollar question when we think about the delicious hunk of meat, Charlie Puth. Regardless of his sexual orientation, I think we can all agree that our lives are a lot better with Charlie in it! The talented singer-songwriter-producer recently released “Light Switch,” a funky, up-tempo track about Puth crooning about his attraction to a love interest. “I made ‘Light Switch’ on the internet thinking it was not going to see the light of day and here I am talking to you about it and millions of people have heard it,” Puth reflected. “You make music to make people dance, as cliché as that sounds,” he added. “But there’s nothing better.”

Melissa Viviane Jefferson, otherwise known as Lizzo, is a powerhouse American singer, rapper, songwriter and flutist. Born in Detroit, Michigan, she later moved to Houston, Texas, where she originally began performing. In 2011, she moved to Minneapolis, where she began her recording career in hip hop music. Lizzo attained mainstream success with the release of her third studio album, Cuz I Love You (2019), which peaked inside the top five of the US Billboard 200.

Lizzo has a strong LGBTQ+ following and has affectionately dubbed her fans “Lizzbians”. In June 2019, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a watershed moment in the modern LGBTQ rights movement, Queerty named her one of the Pride50 “trailblazing individuals who actively ensure society remains moving towards equality, acceptance and dignity for all queer people.”

Throughout her career, Lizzo has been subject to body shaming. She is considered a pivotal image for body positivity and self-confidence and credits social media, and the Internet in general, for changing the narrative around size and giving visibility to overweight women.

Her new single, “‘About Damn Time’ can lead into so many conversations,” she explains in a recent interview. “It’s about damn time I feel better, it’s about damn time we get out of this pandemic. It’s about damn time we get the first Black female Supreme Court Justice. There are so many things. It’s about damn time we popped the champagne. It’s about damn time the tequila got here.”
