Queerguru reviews Renée Marie Petropoulos’s 4th short film ‘SOUVENIR’ screening at SXSW

I have to confess that until now I had never given much thought to the subject matter of Australian queer filmmaker Renée Marie Petropouloss 4th short film SOUVENIR.  It’s the story of two teenage girls Keira and Zoe who fall in love while on a family holiday in some tropical paradise.  They seem to spend a lot of time happily getting intimate, but the mood is broken when Zoe starts taking pictures during their lovemaking.  When Keira expresses how uncomfortable she is with this, Zoe initially persuades her to approve, but that’s only temporary

The film neatly raises the whole question of consent, as even though Zoe has no intentions beyond keeping these images as a souvenir of their vacation, by ignoring Keira’s wishes to delete the photos, she is violating her rights to her personal space and privacy.

Food for thought from this pertinent wee film with two very talented main lead performances 8/10
