Queerguru checks out MAN ABOUT TOWN : a British-style bi-monthly magazine aimed at high-end business-engaged and culturally-orientated male urbanities

Man About Town is an independently produced British-style magazine for men, that was established in 2007.  It is based in London and is published in a bi-annual print edition, and its very particular stylized attitude appeals to the “confident, intelligent, luxury-conscious man of today.‘ Man About Town is a guide to the season featuring comprehensively detailed, uniquely presented articles, which provide a full, distinctive view of their subjects. The distinctive fashion truly matters to the reader and all content is created by the most prominent, contemporary stylists, photographers, and journalists.

It is the brainchild of its creator HUW GWYTHER who is also the founder and editorial director of WONDERLAND, and ROLLACOASTER.  His background includes studying fashion at Central Saint Martin’s before moving to Paris to work for Mario Testino, and then a stint in New York to work at Visionaire and V Magazine. When he  moved back to London in 2005 he launched Wonderland

Gwyther’s journey is hardly typical of the English fashion industry as he appeared on a BBC TV program ‘The Dragons Den.’  It gives budding entrepreneurs three minutes to pitch their business ideas to five multi-millionaires who are willing to invest their own cash, time, and expertise to kick-start the business.  Gwyther was convincing enough to be given  £175,000 which was enough to launch his UK consumer lifestyle magazine Wonderland.

In a field where mainstream magazines struggle/fail, Wonderland is one of London’s most stylish success stories.  Credit to Gwyther for sticking to his philosophy of making the articles high-brow and the overall style of the magazine is luxury and escapism., He told Campaign Magazine that he was  targeting men and women because he believes sophisticated, intelligent information and entertainment are for everyone.

Two years later Gwyther launched Man About Town a British-style bi-monthly magazine aimed at high-end business-engaged and culturally-orientated male urbanities (affluent 30 to 45-year-old “alpha males”.) giving a guide to the seasonal men’s must-haves and featuring present editorial and photographic imagery.

Grammy-award winner Miguel covers Man About Town’s Autumn/Winter 2023 Issue. He talks about the release of his fifth studio record VISCERA Issue, collaborating with the likes of Lil Yachty, and how experiencing loss drove him to enrich his understanding of himself.

Having just come across Man About Town, and although I do not fit neatly into its target market (!) I have become a big fan. Looking through some back issues, I am impressed by how the magazine has kept to its original mission in a climate when so many publications start to dumb down thinking it’s the only way they can prosper/survive.

Man About Town is  NOT for everyone, but then again, neither is QUEERGURU
