Provincetown, at the very tip of Cape Cod, has always enjoyed worldwide recognition for having a very successful Art Colony that has fostered a whole school of art of its own. It’s traditions are firmly rooted in the remarkable landscapes in PTown’s exceptional light that seem to be the focus of so much of the art here.
However in this very diverse community which has a significant LGBTQ population, we can finally see the emergence of a few more forward-thinking group of queer artists whose sexuality is an important aspect of their art. This in particular so perfectly reflects the aspirations of the vast majority of a younger more contemporary generation that fills the Town each year now.
One of Queerguru’s favorite local queer artists in Christopher Sousa, who has been a full-time resident here for nigh on 15 years. Sousa insists that he loves the solitary life here (we’re assuming he means the winters when the town shrinks dramatically). As isolated as he tries to be Sousa still beautifully captures the essence of all the diversity and constant change that make this piece of unreal heaven that we call PTown such a mecca for our LGBTQ community.
His work, and that of other local queer artists, represent the future in a town that often spends far too much time looking back at its past.
