Queer legend CHARLES BUSCH is going to be a PAPA

The Obie Award Winner David Drake  (The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me) who is currently the Artistic Director of The Provincetown theater is going to make the legendary queer writer/performer CHARLES BUSCH a Papa!    Not in the literal sense of making a parent (!) but by honoring him with this year’s Provincetown American Playwright Award (hence PAPA).

Busch, the third recipient of this prestigious Award, will  receive it from last years winner Paula Vogel  in a virtual show that will begin at 5:30PM ET on August 15.

Earlier this year Busch starred in his own play The Confessions of Lily Dare at the Cherry Lane Theater for which he received both a Drama Desk Nomination and a Lucille Lortel Nomination for Outstanding Lead actor in a Play .

Busch’s long and sparkling repertoire includes such gems of hits such  as Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, Psycho Beach Party, Flipping My Wig, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife , The Divine Sister and Die, Mommie, Die!

The latter in  particular was a great vehicle for Busch’s style  of acting which is based on the exaggerated style of the leading ladies of he golden screen.

Busch even rewrote the book for Boy George‘s short-lived autobiographical musical Taboo.

Busch was initially like an old school theater manager ….. maybe like a queer Orson Welles …. when back in the 1980’s at the Limbo Lounge he and his troupe would churn out plays like an ad hoc repertory company.

Now he is like the Grand Old Dame of queer theater : an iconic diva who has entertained us one way or another in such glorious style for decades.  He so deserves to be a PAPA.
