One of the (many) things we like about QUEERGURU being based in Miami, Florida, for half of our year is the sheer diversity in its culture. We thought that after immigrating from London (YES WE ARE LEGAL ….LOL) this would be one aspect of life we would miss, but it’s actually the opposite as this very queer-friendly city is so rich in cultures we had not experienced until now. A particularly strong influence here is the physical and spiritual closeness to Cuba and its people, many of whom moved here for various reasons, including political persecution, economic hardship, and a desire for better opportunities. Their impact on a previously ‘very white’ South Florida has been phenomenal and one that has been so receptive of the growth if the LGBTQA+ community after we saw off the lunacy of the rampantly homophobic Anita Bryant (the subject of queer filmmaker Kareem Tabsch’s new doc)
One such event now on our calendar is QUEER CUBA which highlights a powerful selection of contemporary Cuban short films created by Cuban filmmakers, all shot in Cuba. These films offer an intimate and nuanced look at the LGBTQ+ experience within a nation that has been under dictatorship since 1959. It’s the latest in a series of such events celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Oolite Arts (an innovative local arts organization) with a new installment of their screening series, where residents and alumni present the short films that have influenced their creative journeys and deepened their love for cinema
This special edition, curated by Hansel Porras Garcia, Oolite Arts’ 2021 Cinematic Resident and current Cinematic Arts Director
