PTown celebrates LGBTQ Pride again (and again)

Heading for just its 2nd ever Gay Pride Weekend, the city of Provincetown has already been hailed by ORBITZ as the number one destination to celebrate the occasion.  May be justa tad exaggerated, but hey we were always taught to accept every compliment graciously  The premiere event last year was however an unqualified success and the organisers the PBG (Provincetown Business Guild i.e. an LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce) are stepping the action up even more this time around.

Making a very welcome return will be visual artist Yvette Mattern with her Global Rainbow, a large-scale public art light installation that engulfs she sky at night.  She talked to QUEERGURU last year about her stunning project.

P Town is also planning to  honor the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots through a partnership with the Stonewall National Museum & Archives.  They are creating the Stonewall Stroll, a series of large-scale descriptive posters, designed by the Museum & Archives, will be installed at local businesses throughout Provincetown. The stroll will begin at the LGBTQ Welcome and Resource Center, where maps will be available to guide participants through the exhibit.

That will be complemented by the “Stonewall Inn Witnesses to History” program on Saturday, June 1 at Pilgrim House. Two Stonewall veterans who were arrested at the riots, Mark Segal and David Velasco Bermudez, will tell their stories in a program moderated by Chris Rudisill, former executive director of the Stonewall National Museum & Archives.

It all kicks off on Friday, May 31, with the official Pride Ferry making two trips from Boston to Provincetown. Pride weekend will also include Pride Yoga, dance parties, the unofficial Pride Sashay to Tea, at  famous Boatslip Tea Dance. Lea Delaria’s brand new Club is planning a Surprise Performance.  The weekend ‘s festivities will close with an Underwear Party at Club Purgatory.
