Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese has reunited with iconic lesbian writer Fran Lebowitz to make a second documentary on the most opinionated New Yorker with her razor sharp wit. Scorsese had previously directed the 2010 HBO documentary film ‘Public Speaking, (click HERE for our review) which included a variety of clips of Lebowitz’s interviews and speaking engagement
“Pretend It’s A City” follows Lebowitz as she roams the city with which she has become synonymous, with her acerbic and hilarious commentary. It also features interviews with the 70-year-old essayist, allowing her to bemoan the issues she sees in her city.
“In New York there are millions of people,” Lebowitz declares in the trailer, “and the only person looking where she’s going is me.” She’s also seen proclaiming that, “It would take one subway ride for the Dalai Lama to turn into a lunatic.“
Her life has not all been smooth sailing and Lebowitz is famous for her decades-long writer’s block – which she refers to as her “writer’s blockade” and has largely supported herself with television appearances and speaking engagements. She once described her career as follows: “People asking me my opinion, and people not allowed to interrupt.”
Scorsese and Lebowitz are old friends and in this highly anticipated very affectionate profile, he ensures that she shines through
“Pretend It’s A City” is scheduled to premiere on Netflix January 8.
