You’ll probably know LA-based Brit photographer, Magnus Hastings, for his stunning book WHY DRAG? which he published in 2016. It was an enormous success and went straight to the top of the portrait photography charts. Sir Elton John, who has an extremely impressive collection of photography, summed it up so succinctly when he said ” this is the best fucking photography book in years” . We would never disagree with Sir Elton.
Two years later Hastings embarked on a new project called #GayFace . For this invited several facets of the queer community to be photographed within the confines of a 6’5′ square box. Everyone was invited to bring props, paint the box and just stamp their own identity within the space. It was a huge success with over 150 boxes being dropped on social media making #gayface go viral.
After eventually photographing about 1000 boxes in different cities around the US, Hastings created a new book featuring the very best of them. Rainbow Revolution is the result. We have reproduced just a few of them here, but in the book, they are accompanied by essays from a cross-section of the participants to add a new layer to the project exploring people’s sexuality and gender identity.
