In the late 1980’s the superstar queer pop duo PET SHOP BOYS were reluctantly to undertake more touring so they embarked on making a film consisting of several of their music videos. However once the met Jack Bond a director of the acclaimed Brit TV culture program The South Bank Show, the project morphed into a full feature.
Bind just put the duo into his idea of what the songs mean, and as the Pet Shop Boy’s Neil Tennant had insisted that it wasn’t to be too literal, it all ended up being pretty surreal. As it happened years before Bond had produced/director films on both Herzog and Dali which should have indicated where he got some of his ‘adventurous’ ideas on form and style
The film was both a critical and commercial flop even though it had 12 Pet Shop Boys songs and a cast that included Joss Ackland Neil Dickson, Gareth Hunt and Barbara Windsor . Bond however was keen however to make a sequel but Tennant however was not keen .
Both the US and the Japanese DVD’s of the film were discontinued over 30 years ago but now thanks to the BFI in London, has been restored and released in 4K BUT sadly right now only in the UK . You can buy it HERE
However check out the trailer below and you’ll see why this brilliant movie captured the Pet Shops Music in such an innovative fashion that was way way ahead of its time. So many music videos that came after in the following years owe so much to the wicked imagination of Tennant and Bond. The film has some incredible touches of genius that make you want to revisit the Pet Shop Boys whole catalogue with a fresh pair of eyes. And ears.
