P Town’s Tennessee Williams Fest goes Outdoors

For so many  (theatre queens?) Provincetown is totally synonymous with Tennessee Williams.  This great queer American playwright not only wrote some of his best work there, but he also had it performed at the Town’s theater.  That’s when he wasn’t too busy admiring and enjoying some of the best local sights that came in the shape of scantily clad hot men.

Williams, although long dead, is still celebrated in Ptown which he was so fond of, and in turn, who are avid admirers of his work.    And we know that he would admire the tenacity of the Town’s Tennessee Williams Festival who simply refuse to allow even the Lockdown to stop their annual celebrations.  This year, for the 2nd year running, all the different productions will be performed outside,

The Festival is on September  23rd -26th as usual, but on  Saturday, June 5th there will be  Spring Performance Gala with the fabulous Amy Jo Jackson’s Brass Menagerie.  (Check out the video below).  This is a crucial fundraiser to help ensure that ‘the show will go on‘ in the Fall.

This year’s theme – “Censorship and Tennessee Williams” – explores the battles the playwright had with municipal and Hollywood censors as well as the self-censoring he did with his most controversial works.

“When we originally chose our theme three years ago, it had a more historical focus – the Puritans and Tennessee Williams’ decades of battles with censors,” explained Festival co-founder and curator David Kaplan. In 2021, the conversation about censorship has shifted dramatically. In 2021, we’re discussing when, if ever, censorship is appropriate.

The Festival also will present the work of other wayward writers including Mae West and Bertolt Brecht.
