OSCARS 2022 : the queer reasons to be happy and proud.

It all started with the fabulous Wanda Sykes.  She alongside Oscar co-hosts Amy Schumer and Regina Hall got the crowd really warmed up by making reference to Florida’s infamous ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, Sykes said, “We’re going to have a great night tonight and for you people in Florida, we’re going to have a gay night. Gay gay gay gay gay…” and the crowd loved it.  The very interesting thing is that the Oscars are screened by ABC TV which is owned by Disney

Then the first award of the night went to the incredibly talented Ariana Debose who scooped up the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in West Side Story,  despite steep competition from Jessie Buckley, Aunjanue Ellis, Kirsten Dunst and Judi Dench who were all nominated in the same category. She repeated the success of Rita Moreno who won for playing the same role of Anita in the original movie 50 years ago.

Ariana became the first queer woman of color to win big at the Oscars, and has already collected a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, and so grab a kleenex to watch  her beautiful touching acceptance speech from last night

Jessica Chastain finally got her first Academy Award (after being nominated twice before). She won it for her superb performance for playing the lead in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, the story of one of favorite queer icons.  Back in September 2021 we published Queerguru reviews Jessica Chastain’s Oscar worthy performance in THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYEIt’s so nice to get it right once ina while .

After watching and listening to her powerful words in her acceptance speech, we want to nominate her again for her unfailing and very vocal  support of the LGBTQ+  community. She is an amazing ally …… eho managed to have us reaching for more kleenexs,

Jane Campion won her second Oscar and became third woman to win Best Director for The Power of the Dog. With its tender queer love story, even though it had two gay-for-pay actors in the role, both were nominated for Academy Awards for the authenticity of their performances

Oscar nominee Kristen Stewart may not have won for her extremely impressive performance as Princess Diana in Spencer, but she made a great entrance to the event wearing Chanel shorts and sharing a kiss with her fiance Dylan Meyer .

Elliot Page, looking very dapper in a tuxedo, reunited with his Juno co-stars on stage to mark the 15-year anniversary of the coming-of-age comedy-drama. Joined by Jennifer Garner and JK Simmons, Page celebrated the originality of the Juno script before reading the list of nominees in the Best Original Screenplay category, which ultimately went to Kenneth Branagh for Belfast.

Taking your mother to the Oscars as your ‘date’ is nothing new: think Leonardo DiCaprio,Keanu Reeves, Bradley CooperJavier Bardem etc. etc. but Daniel N. Durant star of CODA, outdid them all. He took his two mothers to the Awards Ceremony and said “I wouldn’t be here without them” and how very grateful he was to them for adopting him and supporting him.
