As much as we are sad that Glenn Close went home empty handed from the Oscars last night for the seventh time, we simply could not be more thrilled that Olivia Colman won the Leading Actress Award last night. In the Queerguru Office The Favourite was, and still is, out very favourite movie of 2018. And that is not just because it had more gay sex in it than Bohemian Rhapsody.
Yorgos Lanthimos wonderfully bizarre and somewhat manic hilarious period comedy drama grabs your attention from the very first scene, and never lets up for one single moment. And you don’t have to a Brit to appreciate the glorious historical (and hysterical) scandals that the Royal Family were then embroiled in.
Olivia Colman’s career best performance as Queen Anne was sublimely funny and she generously has always given credit to the fact that she was helped by two wonderful Oscar winning actresses playing her lovers Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone who were also nominated for their performances.
Up to the Awards ceremony it looked like that Ms Close was a dead cert for picking up the gold statuette but the Academy has a reputation for always containing a few upsets. and Olivia Colman’s win was definitely the biggest and best of the night.
If you were not a fan already than you cannot possibly fail to be swept away by her spontaneous and heartfelt speech. None of the usual serious platitudes about changing the world etc but this quintessentially Brt actor just shared the fact she was brimming over with joy.
Next up for Olivia Colman will be her playing another queen, when she takes over the role of the present monarch in the next season of The Crown. We cannot wait.
