January 26th 2017 sees the world premiere of The Times Are Racing the latest work by New York City Ballet star choreographer and principal dancer Justin Peck. According to an interview in The New York Times, Peck said he had started choreographing the dance before the presidential election, but after Donald J. Trump won, he said, the ballet changed course. Set to the music of Dan Deacon , the dancers foresake their dance pumps for sneakers and wear T-shirts and hoodies emblazoned with words like Unite, React, Act, Protest and Fight
Openly gay Peck, now 29 years old, was the subject of a rather stunning 2014 documentary by filmmaker Jody Lee Lipes called Ballet 422 that trailed Peck as he created a new work. The movie is available on most major streaming platforms.
Here though is an excerpt of the rather amazing ‘The Times Are Racing’ filmed in a NY Subway station .
