Our second piece of news from Ireland this week comes from Dundalk which although is the county town of County Louth, is a tiny place in a much bigger picture. It would have been tough for anyone to come out anywhere on the LGBTQ spectrum in the past like most rural areas. That is now all changing.
In this town situated halfway between Dublin and Belfast, Outcomers a local social and befriending support group for LGBTQ+ people has been marking the progress. In June this year they invited businesses and residents of Dundalk to fly the rainbow flag from their premises; with the plan of making a video showing off Louth in all its colorful glory!
The result is NOW YOU SEE US. It was made to celebrate Dundalk Pride 2021 “because we of COVID can’t welcome you all in person to our drop-in centre this year, we have decided to mark it with this special video looking at the journey from the early years when Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people were not as accepted as they are today.
Grab a box of kleenex as you watch this moving wee film and think of all those people in the past who faced no alternative than to leave home to become their true selves. They and those who followed, who created this sea of change have helped make all of Ireland a place to be proud to gay.
