Back in the early 1970’s, there was a play that opened in London’s West End called NO SEX PLEASE WE’RE BRITISH. It was panned by all the critics but nevertheless it ran for SIXTEEN YEARS. Nevertheless, US audiences were not impressed, and the Broadway production lasted for a total of 10 performances. I should add that there wasn’t a single gay man in the audience, after all homosexuality was only legalised in the UK in 1969, and we had a lot of catching up to do quick to point out that his group’s title doesn’t imply celibacy. “It’s called ‘No Sex Gay Weekend,‘” he says. “Not ‘No Sex Gay Life.‘” Confused? Evidently, he first conceived the idea of a sex-free weekend while he was vacationing at a gay resort in Southern Spain. Despite being in a beautiful place, he found himself incessantly scrolling Grindr and sizing up the hotel’s clientele. The constant cat-and-mouse game sent him into a depressive state.
Hmmm, so far we are not convinced: if he had got laid, would this be happening?
So a year after his enforced celibacy, “No Sex Gay Weekend” has hosted some 30 events and welcomed 700-some gays. They recently had a picnic at St. Charles Park in London, and also hosted weekend retreats throughout the year. We read that cruising is ‘discouraged, ‘ but this is a group of gay men, and we know how tough so many us have trouble keeping our pecker in our pants.
Plus, there is a reason why they have never revived THAT play ….. we Brits have a lot of time to make up on.
