New Queer Music for Fall : Love Harder, Justin Bieber, Anabel Englund and Faultlines.

The song “Yeehaw” from Love Harder featuring Willie Jones & Rynn begins with a whole lot of country flare, guitar riffs, and twang but by the time you get to the chorus you are immediately transformed to a contagious dance beat and heavy bass that makes you want to hit the dancefloor. Such a unique way to blend country and dance and make it sound incredible – instant gratification to a good mood.

Justin Bieber’s new song “Lonely” is about the dark side of childhood stardom. The video features a young boy in a dressing room all alone before he is eventually called out to sing in front of an empty audience (aside from Bieber himself making an appearance in one of the seats).  Everybody knows my past now. Like my house was always made of glass. And maybe that’s the price you pay – For the money and fame at an early age.” The song and lyrics are a bit more solemn than Bieber’s usual upbeat tracks but I think it is important to show the vulnerability and honesty in his work – and that life can sometimes feel messy and unfiltered.

“Picture Us” by electric dance songstress Anabel Englund tells a story of two people who get through dark times together, knowing they can always count on one another. The video begins with two young women skipping down the street holding hands in school uniforms and quickly turns to the same young lovers transforming into space. “You say I picture us dreaming on a silver spaceship. Laughing with the sunset, feel the Earth’s rotation. Happy with the thought we won’t ever feel lonely again.” An important message that the human connection and the power of love conquers all.

The song “Rain” by the folk pop duo Faultlines directly addresses our Nation’s uncertain political climate surrounding women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, immigration and what is at stake in the upcoming election.  “As we are approaching the 2020 election, it’s so important to remind everyone that we cannot endure four more years,” says queer lead vocalist John Flanagan. “There’s a man in a big white house trying to take my rights away. There’s a man sitting on a bench trying to take my ring away. There’s a man trying to build a wall, he wants to take my friends away.” A stark reminder that virtually every American will be impacted by this election and that it is imperative to exercise your right to VOTE!
