New HIV diagnoses in the UK drop by a whopping 73%

The UK Government’s Public Health England (PHE), has just released a new Report with some heartwarming good news. According to new data they have gathered HIV diagnoses in the UK have declined by by a whopping 73 per cent since 2014.

In 2014, there were around 2,300 HIV diagnoses among gay and bisexual men, this figure dropped to 800 in 2018. The number of gay and bisexual men who are living undiagnosed with HIV have also halved during this time period from 7,000 in 2014 to 3,600 in 2018.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said:  “We are well on our way towards our ambition of zero HIV transmissions by 2030 and we should be rightly proud of the incredible progress we have already made.”

However The Terrence Higgins Trust, a major British charity that campaigns on and provides services relating to HIV and sexual health,  advised caution about getting too excited about these new results.  In a statement they said :Today new stats from @PHE_uk show another fall in HIV diagnoses – but that progress is slowing. That’s why we’re calling for a redoubling of efforts to ensure we reach our #ZeroHIV goal by 2030. That includes proper public health funding and PrEP access!
