Netflix’s 10DANCE excites QUEERGURU to put our dancing shoes on again …. and maybe even fall in love. Again

If your interest in Strictly Come Dancing (on UK TV) or Dancing With The Stars (US TV) is waning, then have we got some really fab news for you.  Just when we were starting to think we may never watch Netflix again after they have just cancelled some of our favorite queer programming, they have released a wee gem from Japan that will reignite our interest in ballroom dancing. Plus, it may even have us thinking about forgiving Netflix.

Welcome to 10Dance an adaptation of a manga (a Japanese graphic novel) about two professional dancers — both named Shinya — who have a fierce rivalry and are ranked No. 1 and 2.  Shinya Sugiki played by Keita Machida who, who dominates Latin dance, surprises his rival, Shinya Suzuki played by Ryoma Takeuchi (who reigns as Japan’s ballroom champion) with a challenge for the two men to join forces and enter a 10-Dance competition, where dancers compete in both Latin and Ballroom styles. Suzuki reluctantly agrees, setting the fierce rivals up for incredible tension and undeniable chemistry.

“10 DANCE” depicts the passion, anguish, jealousy and love shared between two men wholly devoted to dance. It presents a thoughtful exploration of desire and the connection between men within a competitive athletic context. Rather than treating the romance as secondary to the dance competition, the narrative weaves both elements together, creating a story about yearning, acceptance, and the tension between rivalry and intimacy. It is frankly…..as HOT AS HELL.  9/10

Once, a long time ago now, as a ballroom dancer and now living in South America, this film did not disappoint. The tension, relationship and feelings both between the men and the dance and the men themselves are enough to make one sit on the edge of their seat. Beautiful and it seems there will be a follow-up.
