More and more queer films are getting so innovative with their choice of music for their soundtracks. Not only does it add so much to the overall enjoyment of the movie, but it so often introduces audiences to artistes that have not popped up on their rader so far.
Just this week as QUEERGURU was reviewing films for both OUTFEST LA and OUTshine Virtual Film Festivals we came across three musicians that we now simply cannot stop listening too,
SINGLE STREET a new Dutch rom com features a music track WHO NEEDS YOU from LOREN NINE a very talented singer/songwriter whose haunting voice bares more than a passing resemblance to Adele.
Nine is extremely well known in Europe (her song Glowing got over 12m hits) and her music, that is influenced by the 1950’s has made her a star.
As part of the soundtrack of his debut movie CICADA , filmmaker Matt Fifer chose Lianne La Havas’s Gold and Green. La Havas is a British singer/songwriter who started her career singing backup vocals for Paloma Faith, and then her debut album in 2012 Is Your Love Big Enough? was named iTunes Album of the Year. La Havas has a very unique hypnotic voice which makes all three of her albums essential listening for us now.
For his sophomore queer movie TWO EYES which is having its World Premiere at OUTFEST LA Virtual Film Festival, writer/director TRAVIS FINE put together an exceptional soundtrack that complimented his very impressive queer cinematic triptych. For its epic-like scenario Fine had several new tracks commissioned including a couple from South African musician/actor Nakhane who played a character in the film too.
We had seen him before in John Trengove‘s 2017 feature film Inxeba (The Wound) in which resulted in both controversy and critical acclaim. But we were still not prepared to be blown away by both his performance and his music.
We cannot access any of those actual tracks from Two Eyes (yet) but watch this similar one and you’ll see why he is a new Queerguru favorite.
