If only TV reflected life and vice versa, then we would opt for replacing reality with The Diplomat, if for no better reason, the President of the US is none other than Allison Janney. And she had good training for the role, picking up all those Primetime Awards for starring in The West Wing. She’s back on our screens on HBO, still very much in charge, starring in a new movie, Miss You Love You written and directed by actor and Academy Award winner Jim Rash that we think will result in more awards all round/
Janney plays Diane whose husband Henry has just died of Parkinson’s in New Mexico, where they had moved to from New York. Her son Tyler from her first marriage is absent in every sense of the word, and rather than attend the funeral, he sends his personal assistant, Jamie (Andrew Rannells). He proves to be a great match for the grieving widow and at first his empathy borders on a maniacal desire to please her
But Diane is very much in charge, and although reluctantly, Jamie defers to her, and it’s their superb on-screen relationship that lifts this movie onto a much higher plane than we were led to expect. Also look out for scene-stealing turns from Bonnie Hunt and Oscar Nunez in this compelling wee drama
