Michael Urie’s star keeps rising in the third season of SHRINKING

Somehow we have missed out watching SHRiNKING : an Apple TV series about a recently widowed graphic therapist who decides to start telling his patients the truth.  Starring Jason Segel (Sean) who was also one of the writers, and an eclectic cast including Harrison Ford, Jessica WilliamsChrista MillerMichael Urie, Luke Tennie, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley, it was recognized as one of the top ten television programs of the year by the American Film Institute

I’m unsure why it never appeared on our radar until now especially as openly gay Michael Urie, who flits so successfully between stage and screen, plays one half of a gay couple who are adopting a baby.  Urie’s TV breakthrough was some 20 years ago when he played Vanessa Williams’ PA in Ugly Betty.  It was meant to be a one-season role but they quickly signed him up for the rest of the run, and he picked up an Emmy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor.  Now he plays Sean’s best friend who has been studiously ghosting himsince the death of his wife. However, as his life begins to spin out of control, he needs Brian’s help bringing together a group of disparate people, all facing their own struggles and forms of grief — be it the loss of a loved one, a marriage, or even their health — to form the kind of unique family that you can’t help but love and want to spend time with.

Urie recently said that he felt like he was making something special while filming the first season, but it was confirmed when he sat down to watch the final product with his partner, fellow actor Ryan Spahn. “At one point, he was like, I know it’s good because I’m not trying to think of things to talk about. I’m just enjoying it. And I want to know what happens. And I’m invested in these people. And I’m not trying to think what compliment can I give Michael about his scenes in that episode or anything,” .

Full credit to Apple TV for making such good programming when queer characters are a major part of the storyline on mainstream TV in such a natural and matter-of-fact manner.   And not before time….
