Probably the greatest gay love story ever told, James Ivory’s Maurice celebrated its 30th Anniversary last year with a glorious 4K digital restoration with 5.1 surround sound. It is being released in UK cinemas at the end of this month, although elsewhere it is available globally in most major streaming platforms.
Maurice was adapted from E. M. Forster’s tale of forbidden love in the early 20th Century that he had originally written in 1913, and although it was revised several times by the closeted gay author, was not released until after his death in 1971. What was important to him was that the book should have a happy ending, something that was considered completely impossible in his day, but after the partial de-criminalization in the UK in 1968, attitudes were finally beginning to change.
The story follows its main character Maurice Hall through university, a tumultuous relationship, struggling to fit into society, and ultimately being united with his life partner.
It stars James Wilby as Maurice, Hugh Grant as Clive and Rupert Graves as Alec. The supporting cast included Denholm Elliott as Dr Barry, Simon Callow as Mr Ducie, Billie Whitelaw as Mrs Hall, and Ben Kingsley as Lasker-Jones.
When it was had its World Premiere Venice Film Festival at it won three major Awards at the prestigious and almost rave reviews from major critics around the world. The killjoys were the British critics, . Ivory was quoted as saying … almost every important film critic was gay, they came out against the film. Their reactions to it were extraordinary! You’d think that they would have been supportive, but they were afraid to be supportive.
Now it features on practically every single list of Best Queer Films of all time, Maurice is a film that every gay man (and woman) should see at least once.

P.S. Queerguru would love you to bits if you did us one tiny favor. Despite the fact that we have had almost 250K hits on YouTube (yeah!) they will not give us a single cent of the advertising money that they make off us until we have more subscribers. Won’t cost you a dime, but it will help support our site. Just simply click on the link below. Thank you very much!
