Unquestionably one of the most highly anticipated new TV series this season is an audacious historical psychodrama starring Academy Award-winner Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine (from Red, White & Royal Blue). Hard to believe this outrageous in-your-face drama MARY AND GEORGE set in the 17th Century England is based on a true story.
It is the tale of the aggressively ambitious Mary Villiers, Countess of Buckingham, who molded her beautiful son, George, to seduce King James I and become his all-powerful lover. Through their
diabolical scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become one of the richest, most titled, and most influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors. Villiers, was a naïve romantic who alongside his ruthless mother was prepared to stop at nothing to get to the top.
This seven-part limited series on STARZ is created by acclaimed playwright D.C. Moore (“Killing Eve,” Temple) , and one of the directors is Queer Palm Award winner Olivier Hermanus (‘Beauty“). The star-studded supporting cast included Tony Curran as King James plus Lydia Fleming , Nicola Walker, Niamh Algar, Simon Russell Beale and Ryan Oliva
The last word (for now) is from Alison Hoffman, President of Domestic Networks for STARZ. “We can’t wait for the world to discover the untold story of Mary Villiers, who mastered the art of sexual and political conquests in a male-dominated society. And to have Julianne leading this remarkable cast is a dream.” We so agree.
Mary & George will premiere on STARZ April 5, 2024.
