LYDIA : the very real story of the determined transwoman who won the rights of gender recognition for the Irish community

Given the uncertain political climate emanating from the US, based on hate and aimed at destroying the queer community….particulary the trans part, then the release of this new wee Irish documentary is perfectly timed. Lydia is a short film about the groundbreaking and history-making legal battle of Dr Lydia Foy fighting for her gender to be recognised.

In her long, drawn-out fight that lasted some 22 years, Dr Foy possessed a tenacity and stubbornness never to give up, which very few of us would even consider for a single moment. Having to expose herself so publicly, battling through a biased Court System, to end up with the Gender Recognition Act of 2015, which would benefit the entire community, makes her a star in everyone’s book.

The short, which premiered at DIFF, was written and directed by Caleb J Roberts who is a founding member of team TITE, Ireland’s first trans and non-binary film festival, which debuted last April and has an impeccable performance by trans actor Liath Hannon) of the 2025 feature film Girls & Boys

The short TV film was funded and shot as part of Virgin Media Discovers Series Six, which looks to highlight and bolster voices and stories of diversity, and was co-funded by Screen Ireland. and can be accessed globally ONLINE via a VPN.  With the growing number of queer culture now available, we strongly recommend downloading a VPN as soon as possible.
