Long Live The King?

If you are having serious withdrawal symptoms waiting for the Netflix original series The Crown to come back with the much awaited season two, and are missing the British Royal Family, we have just come across something  that we think you will love too. Last Sunday PBS’s Masterpiece Theater showed their stunning new controversial drama King Charles III.

It is the imagined story of life after Queen Elizabeth’s death and Prince Charles now almost 70 years old, finally gets to take over the Throne of England as King Charles. You would have thought after all these decades in waiting watching in the wings as his mother became the most successful Monarch the country has ever known, he would be perfectly ready to take over. But you’d be wrong …… no spoilers here ….. but life suddenly gets impossible tough for the new King.

This nail biting and completely riveting new show written completely in blank verse by Mark Bartlett , is adapted from his play which had very successful runs in London’s West End and on Broadway too picking up Tony Nominations for its two stars and the play itself.  What is particular refreshing (and highly unusual) is that nearly all of the original cast are in this TV adaption. Led by the veteran Brit actor Tim Pigott-Smith with a tour-de-force performance as Charles, and Charlotte Riley as the wonderfully manipulative  Duchess of Cambridge.  Sadly it was Pigott-Smith’s last role before his untimely death last month

King Charles 111 is directed by Rupert Goold is available to view on PBS On Demand and onlinne at .http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/shows/king-charles-iii/
