London’s National Theatre revives Larry Kramer’s THE NORMAL HEART

The iconic queer activist/writer Larry Kramer’s most celebrated work The  Normal Heart is about to be revived at The National Theatre in London.  This largely autobiographical play focuses on the rise of the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and 1984, as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks, the gay founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group. Ned prefers loud public confrontations to the calmer, more private strategies favored by his associates, friends, and closeted lover Felix Turner. Their differences of opinion lead to frequent arguments that threaten to undermine their mutual goal.

The  New York Times critic Frank Rich wrote of the original production in 1985 , “In this fiercely polemical drama … the playwright starts off angry, soon gets furious and then skyrockets into sheer rage”‘

Now  35 years since its explosive UK premiere, director Dominic Cooke is helping a highly-anticipated revival of this classic queer drama with a cast that includes Olivier Award-Winner Ben Daniels, Liz Carr  and Luke Norris .
