Queerguru first encountered the work of queer Canadian American filmmaker Quentin Lee when we reviewed his edgy comedy THE PEOPLE IV”E SLEPT WITH in 2012 starring Wilson Cruz. And then we got to know his work through other cute queer rom coms like Big Gay Love, White Frog and The Summer of Nathan Lee. However what slipped our attention was determined Lee and his project to film alternative/queer stand comics that showed the sheer diversity of talent.
He did this so perfectly with films like Brash Girls Club, Brash Boys Club and two TV series of Comedy Invasion. The latest addition is being Laugh Proud which is the first LGBTQ+ stand-up comedy feature concert film of its kind. Nine very diverse LGBTQ+ comics each perform a short set connected by Jazzmun, the hostess with the mostest, in an orgiastic one-night stand
The most familiar face on stage was Jason Stuart an outrageous openly gay stand-up comedian and prolific character actor, and the most relaxed performer onstage. He has just recorded his own comedy special Making It To The Middle, his new comedy album ‘I’m The Daddy and I Have Candy‘ and autobiography Shut Up, Im Talking
Juno Men (she/her) is an openly transgender comedian and writer. She is the daughter of Cambodian immigrants and mined her relationship with her 94 year old grandmother for the best parts of her routine. And in similar vein 30 year old Brian Clark aka Brucey who shared that he comes from a long line of funny Latin women and attributes his comedy career to all of their horrible dating advice.
The final comedian doing their set is 7G aka British artist Seven Graham: who is the world’s first Out hermaphrodite (aka intersex) comic to perform at the world famous Comedy Store and all over Los Angeles. 7G has opened for top comics, Gina Yashere and Monique Marvez, and was featured in a special article in the LA Times Comedy Special, in 2022.
