Indigenous Queer photographer Lanee Bird, a self-proclaimed dyke and pervert is about to debut her first solo show SKINTIGHT at the Schlomer Haus Gallery in San Francisco. The Gallery is the dreamchild of married gay couple Steffan Schlarb and Brandon Romer who “wanted to create a space in the Castro for the unseen to be seen, and where we can help foster artistic creativity and culture in the Castro.”
Skintight is a perfect fit for them as Bird’s fetish work draws influence from the likes of Helmut Newton and Robert Mapplethorpe in a nod to 80s/ 90s aesthetics, however, Bird breaks away from the male-dominated tradition of fetish photography to divert the gaze into queer femme worship.
Many of her subjects are sex workers, dominatrixes and kink models. While SKINTIGHT is an exploration of Bird’s personal obsessions of fetishism, this exhibition of photographs also serves as a celebration of her friends and peers within the BDSM community.
Opening reception is Friday, January 20th, 5pm to 9pm. SKINTIGHT runs through Saturday, March 18th Schlomer Haus Gallery, 2128 Market St Gallery Hours: Tue – Sat 12-6pm, and by appointment
