London’s Kings Head Theatre keeps reminding us of what an important source it is for such excellent queer theatre. This summer it invited 4 different LGBTQ artistic directors to curate new work as part of The Takeover : Queer Futures Project
The Theatre is now about to start the final of the four seasons of The Takeover’s diverse programs of work curated by David Cumming (co-Artistic Director SpitLip and Kill the Beast, Co-creator Operation Mincemeat) season of work: QUEER FUTURES: A FESTIVAL OF THE NOW WHICH IS YET TO COME.
One of his selections is 1000 Ways The World Will End (& how it starts again) the debut play from Women’s Playwriting Prize 2021 shortlistee Alice Flynn.
Yrsa and Astrid are star-crossed lovers caught in an endless cycle of death and reincarnation, fearing an end that never comes. This is a psychedelic, forest-core journey of discovery about the stubborn resilience of lesbian love in the face of adversity.
Directed by Alice Robb and starring Kalifa Taylor & Phoebe Cresswell this show charts the lost histories of queer women and changing cultural attitudes towards the end of days. The play runs 24 Jul → 12 Aug
Following this will be the Goya Theater Company from Oxford with a new queer musical FOUR FELONS AND A FUNERAL. It’s a bumpy ride through grief, love and friendship. The tale of four (dysfunctional) friends on a roadtrip to scatter their mate’s ashes. En route, they go through the five essential stages of grief: screaming, shouting, fighting, f*cking, and fleeing from justice.
Written and directed by Sam Woof, and Musical Direction by Math Roberts, the cast includes Maddy Maguire, Jordan Broatch, Gabrielle Friedman and Rua Barron.
The show plays 26th and 27th July before making tracks to perform at Edinburgh Fringe Festival
